Welcome to the UA Horn Studio!

Fall 2018 UA Horn Studio

Welcome to the University of Arizona Horn Studio Website! Interested in studying horn at the University of Arizona? Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me for more information – jlundy@email.arizona.edu.

The UA Horn Studio provides outstanding opportunities for growth and success: guest artists and teachers visit frequently, there are two performance-based graduate assistantships for horn, and the studio has several special instruments for student use, including a Paxman natural horn and a Yamaha triple horn. I would be happy to plan a campus visit for you to experience the studio offerings for yourself!

This year’s studio class topics include:

  • • Physical set-up: improving strength and mobility
  • • The mental game: how to quiet the mind and build focus for stressful performance situations
  • • Connecting with deep emotions and channeling them into performance
  • • Hearing protection for musicians
  • • Pedagogy topics and how to build a private teaching studio
  • • Audition intensive with Chris Jackson, 3rd Horn, Tucson Symphony: proven techniques for preparation and successful performance
  • • Freelancing and how to market yourself as a performer
  • • Beyond orchestral rep: pops concerts, sightreading, jazz rhythms, and skills for various types of music

In 2012, the UA Horn Studio was endowed by former UA horn professor Daniel Katzen, in honor of his mother, Betty Katzen. More information about Ms. Katzen’s life and legacy can be found below.
